Today, Leslie, my former intern Jess (who has far surpassed me by becoming a fancy publicist in NYC) and I took in two costume exhibits. First , we went to the Met for an exhibit showcasing fashion eras of the American Woman. After, we went to the Brooklyn Museum for a sampling of their collection.
If you can, see both. If you can only see one, go to the Brooklyn Museum. We all agreed hands down Brooklyn was awesome and the better of the two. It’s so amazing and inspiring. I want to go back in time, major in art history and become a costume curator at the Brooklyn Museum — or anyplace that will have me.
Sigh. These mobile phone pictures are terrible. I did pick up the catalog, which is totally available on line for free 😀
On our rushed way back to Manhattan to catch my bus home, we stopped at Mood. I, meant to just get some cotton batiste. But, two yards of this silk / cotton blend came home with me too.
The cellphone pics aren’t bad. I bought the book too. I love those books for inspiration. Glad you had a good time!
You did a whirlwind tour! That silk is to die for!
I was in New York for the week and I got to go to the exhibit at the Met. I even managed to get in a few photos before the docent yelled at me. 🙂 I wish I’d known about the exhibit in Brooklyn or else I would have gone as well. I just kept thinking that what I really wanted to do was take all the fancy dresses off the mannequins and see how they were made and touch all of those amazing fabrics. But alas, no. I hope you enjoyed the exhibit as much as I did.
Haha, that’s kinda funny. I didn’t do a degree in Art History, but I am on my way to becoming a Dress Historian, and doing my PhD through an Art History dept; even though I don’t really like looking at dress as part of art history (there’s SO much to it than aesthetics!) and prefer the field/approach of Material Culture instead.
It’s never too late though! However, you certainly wouldn’t be doing it either for the money or the glory. I wish I could get down to see the Brooklyn Museum exhibition, I keep hearing such good things about it.
LOVE that fabric!
That cotton/silk is luscious!
Your pictures are better than I think you’re giving them credit. That fabric is GORGE! I can’t wait to see what you make with it.
LOVE the polka dot silk. Love it! Must take the bus to NYC soon.
Silk/cotton blend sounds so luxurious. I think I might have to have some. Have you ever seen anything like that at A Fabric Place. Seems like something they’s stock.
